Childress remains a King
Thursday, July 02, 2015, 10:03:01 AM

The Sydney Kings are proud to announce that the club have retained star import Josh Childress for the 2015/16 National Basketball League Season.

Childress had an outstanding debut campaign for the purple and gold last season that saw him earn the club’s Most Valuable Player award and a selection in the All-NBL First Team.

The former NBA star led the NBL in points with 21.1 per game, in rebounds with 9.2 per game, and in blocks with 2.1 per game while also finishing the season ranked in the top five for assists with 4.2.

The 32-year-old American shunned interest from a number of clubs around the globe to continue his career as a Sydney King and is now looking forward to building long-term success at the club.

Childress was the favourite to take out league MVP honours before a pectoral injury ended his season early, however he still managed to rank third overall in MVP votes despite the shortened season.

Sydney Kings Head Coach Damian Cotter is understandably excited to have Childress back on board.

“Obviously having a player of Chill’s calibre back on board is huge for us. His experience and leadership, not to mention his tremendous skill and ability, will enhance the direction we are heading in as a club,” said Cotter.

“It’s also great for us to get some continuity within the team.  It is something that we are striving to do in terms of building stability around the roster.”

Sydney Kings General Manager Rod Harys hailed the re-signing as a significant achievement for the organisation.

“It is unquestionably great news that Josh is returning for a second season with the Sydney Kings,” Mr Harys said.

“The work Josh has done throughout his first year here in Sydney both on and off the court is outstanding not only for the club, but for basketball as a whole in this city.”

“Welcoming Josh back in to the team, coupled with the new direction that the NBL is heading, Kings fans can rest assured that we are in for a very exciting year ahead.”

Childress will head back to the United States later this week before returning next month to join the team for preseason training.
